free sock knitting pattern Olive Branch socks pattern belongs to Violet Green; please don't copy, but you're welcome to link to this page if you want to.

Materials: 100g 4ply/sock weight wool, and a set of 2.5mm double pointed needles.

Glossary:

S2K2tog = slip 2 stitches from left to right needle, then knit the 2 stitches together on the right needle, thus decreasing by 1 stitch

k2tog = Knit 2 stitches together, thus decreasing by 1 stitch.

YF=Bring the yarn forward before knitting the next stitch, thereby making a stitch.

Sizes: (1) for small adult/large child, (2) for medium adult, and (3) for large width feet.

Start: Cast on 52 (60, 68) stitches, and arrange them over 3 double pointed 2.5mm needles. Place a marker between the first and last stitch in the round. Working in the round, knit 6 (6, 8) rows of knit 1 purl 1 rib.

Knit one round in which you should increase by 8 stitches evenly over the course of the round. You should now have 60 (68, 76) stitches. Continue in Olive Branch Pattern.

  20. Knit 1 round

Repeat pattern until the cuff is the size you want it to be, stopping at the marker.

Divide for the heel flap:
The heel flap will be plain, so as we divide for the heel flap, we also lose the extra stitches that were needed to get the tension right in the patterned area:

Knit 5 (6, 7) ; S2K2tog; K2tog; knit 12 (14, 16); S2K2tog; K2tog; knit 5 (6, 7) . Then, turn.

Having turned, proceed as follows:

  1. Slip 1 stitch, purl 25 (29, 33) then turn;
  2. Slip 1 stitch, Knit1, repeat to end of heel flap, then turn;
Repeat these 2 rows 12 (14, 16) more times, until the heel flap has 26 (30, 34) rows.

Shape the heel:
Continuing on the heel flap,

  1. Slip 1 stitch, purl 14 (16, 18) purl 2 together, purl 1, then turn;
  2. Slip 1 stitch, knit 5, S2K2tog, knit 1, then turn;
  3. Slip 1 stitch, purl 6, purl 2 together, purl 1, then turn;
  4. Slip 1 stitch, knit 7, S2K2tog, knit 1, then turn;
  5. Slip 1 stitch, purl 8, purl 2 together, purl 1, then turn;
  6. Slip 1 stitch, knit 9, S2K2tog, knit 1, then turn;
Continue in this way until you have picked up all the stitches from the heel flap. You will have 16 (18, 20) stitches left on the heel flap.

Shape the heel gusset:

  • Pick up 13 (15, 17) stitches knitwise down side 1 of the heel flap. Place a marker.
  • Knit across the 30 (34, 38) stitches from the cuff, continuing OB.
  • Place a marker, then pick up 13 (15, 17) stitches knitwise up side 2 of the heel flap.

Now continue with the following 2 rounds, until 56 (64, 72) stitches remain:

  1. Knit up to 3 stitches away from the first marker, then Knit 2 together, then Knit 1. Slip the first marker, then Knit across the patterned area in OB, until you reach the second marker. Slip the second marker, then Knit 1, S2K2tog, then knit to the end of the round.
  2. Knit a round, keeping to OB through the patterned area. When you have 56 (64, 72) stitches remaining, continue without decreasing until the sock is the length you require (the toe you knit will be about 5 (5, 5.5)cm in depth)

Before starting to shape the toe, knit one more round, during which you should decrease by 4 stitches inside the OB area only, as follows: Knit 5 (6, 7) ; S2K2tog; K2tog; knit 12 (14, 16); S2K2tog; K2tog; knit 5 (6, 7). There will be 26 (30, 34) stitches left inside the OB area, and 52 (60, 68) stitches in total.

Shape the toe:
You will shape the toe by decreasing at both sides of the place where the OB and the plain knitting meet. Stop the OBnow, and knit all rounds.

  1. Knit up to 3 stitches away from the first marker, then Knit 2 together, then Knit 1. Slip the first marker, then Knit 1, then S2K2tog. Knit up to 3 stitches away from the second marker, then Knit 2 together, Knit 1. Slip the second marker, then Knit 1, then S2K2tog. Knit to the end of the round.
  2. Knit a round.

Repeat these 2 rows until 20 (24, 28) stitches remain. Arrange these 20 (24, 28) stitches into 2 sets of 10 (12, 14) , so that they will lie flat, ensuring that the hanging thread is at the back-right hand side, then graft the stitches together.

Knit another the same.
